Japanese System of Medical Technologist :

At the present time, there are two types of licences, which are Medical Technologist and Medical Test Technician.

Definition and licensing of Medical Laboratory Technologists (Article 2, Law for Medical and Public Health Laboratory Technologists) are as follows:
"Medical Laboratory Technologists" are licensed by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, and perform microbiological, serological, hematological, pathological, and biochemical tests, as well as physiological tests as defined by law, under the guidance and observation of a physician, using the title of "Medical Laboratory Technologist".
Method of acquiring the license: National Examination (Applicants must pass the National Examination.)

Person eligible to apply the national examination:
1)Graduates from a major course at a 4-year university
2)Graduates from a major course at a 3-year medical technology college.
3)Graduates from a 3-year medical laboratory technology vocational college

The national examination is to be held by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare on March every year, and approximately over 4,000 candidates have taken the examination every year.
Number of taking the National Examination: 4,478
Number of passing the National Examination: 3,046 (68.0%)
